MetaArt™ in Healthcare & Healing Spaces
A Perceptual Environment That Works on Everyone Who Enters — Continuously, Without Facilitation
MetaArt™ paintings are not decorative objects. They are perceptual environments — frequency-based abstract works created through deep meditative channeling that function as visual portals. Through a practice called Ocular Meditation™, viewers enter states of expanded awareness, emotional release, and nervous system settling through sustained, receptive looking. No instruction required. No prior experience necessary. Only the ability to look.
Research in neuroaesthetics suggests that sustained visual engagement with complex abstract imagery activates the Default Mode Network, induces alpha and theta brainwave states associated with deep calm, and supports parasympathetic nervous system activation — the body's natural rest-and-restore response. When a MetaArt™ painting lives in a healing space, it continues working on every person who enters — patients, families, staff — without requiring facilitation, programming, or participation.
What Sets MetaArt™ Apart
Rooted in Contemplative Science
Ocular Meditation™ is an eyes-open contemplative practice rooted in the ancient Sanskrit tradition of Trataka — sustained visual gazing — now supported by emerging research in neuroaesthetics and contemplative neuroscience. A practice paper introducing MetaArt™ and Ocular Meditation™ is currently under peer review at Perspectives on Arts in Health, and formal research is in early development with the University of Virginia's Division of Perceptual Studies.
Documented in Real Healing Environments
MetaArt™ paintings are currently installed in K–12 calm and sensory rooms, where they have been observed to support emotional regulation in neurodiverse children. MetaArt: Integration was created in direct collaboration with Suzy Miller, a leading expert in consciousness and non-verbal autistic individuals, specifically for children on the autism spectrum. The work has been observed to reach children in ways that language and conventional therapeutic approaches cannot.
Radically Accessible
Ocular Meditation™ requires no prior experience, no verbal capacity, and no instruction. It is accessible to patients across age groups, cognitive abilities, and cultural backgrounds — including neurodiverse populations, individuals with cognitive decline, those in behavioral health settings, and patients in end-of-life care.
Commissioned for Your Space
Every MetaArt™ painting is channeled specifically for the people and purpose it will serve. A work commissioned for a healing space carries the frequency of that space's intention — not a generic aesthetic selected from a catalog. There is no other painting in the world with that specific frequency. That is the distinction.
Benefits for Healthcare Environments
Nervous System Regulation
Sustained, receptive visual attention to MetaArt™ compositions is associated with shifts toward calm, reduced stress reactivity, and parasympathetic nervous system activation — the physiological state most conducive to healing, recovery, and emotional resilience.
Non-Verbal Support for Patients and Families
In moments of crisis, grief, or medical uncertainty, language often falls short. MetaArt™ offers a non-verbal perceptual pathway — a way of being held by something that doesn't require words, explanation, or active participation.
Staff Wellbeing
Healthcare workers carry extraordinary emotional weight. A MetaArt™ painting in a staff lounge, consultation room, or corridor offers a moment of genuine restoration — not decoration, but a perceptual shift available in the time it takes to pause and look.
Ongoing Without Facilitation
Unlike programming-based arts interventions, a permanently installed MetaArt™ painting requires no scheduling, no facilitator, and no participation. It works on the environment continuously — for every person who enters, for as long as it hangs there.
Applications
Hospitals — lobbies, patient rooms, behavioral health units, staff areas, and recovery spaces
Pediatric Facilities — calm rooms, sensory spaces, and environments serving neurodiverse populations
Wellness & Integrative Health Centers — meditation rooms, treatment suites, and community gathering spaces
Hospice & Palliative Care — spaces supporting patients and families at the threshold of life
Behavioral Health Facilities — non-verbal, non-threatening perceptual environments for therapeutic support
Elder & Memory Care — accessible to individuals with cognitive decline, limited mobility, or limited verbal communication
The Artist
Lee Ann Heltzel is the originator of MetaArt™ and Ocular Meditation™. She is a 2026 Artist-in-Residence at the Chautauqua Institution School of Art, a member of the National Organization for Arts in Health (NOAH), and a death doula of more than 30 years. Her work has been recognized by the Neuroarts Resource Center at the International Arts + Mind Lab, Johns Hopkins University. She is based outside Pittsburgh, PA.
"Art has always known what medicine is still learning: what we see shapes how we feel, and how we feel shapes how we heal."

Customizable to Your Space
MetaArt is not a one-size-fits-all solution. It can be tailored to the specific needs of any healthcare or wellness environment. Whether it's a large-scale installation for a hospital lobby, smaller pieces for patient rooms, or calming artwork for meditation areas, MetaArt seamlessly integrates with the aesthetic and purpose of your space, ensuring a perfect fit.
